Mississippi Budget Watch

CDF-SRO works with partners statewide to coordinate broad support and form policy solutions for legislative action on behalf of Mississippi children. A key initiative during the 2011 state legislative session was the launch of a new coalition that is calling on state lawmakers to close corporate tax loopholes.  The coalition is called Better Choices For Mississippi. On March 23, 2011, CDF-SRO helped to unveil the coalition’s action plan for shoring up Mississippi’s revenue shortfall. Click here to read news coverage about the announcement in the Rotunda of the Mississippi State Capitol. Current coalition members include the:

  • Mississippi Association of Educators (MAE)
  • Mississippi Human Services Coalition
  • Mississippi Low Income Child Care Initiative
  • Mississippi NAACP
  • Mississippi Coalition for Citizens With Disabilities
  • Mississippi Economic Policy Center

The Mississippi PEER Committee’s staff report found that 70 percent of Mississippi’s largest companies legally skirted paying taxes (in 2006 and 2007) when schools across the state are underfunded. A primary goal of CDF-SRO is to bring attention to the plight of school children who are being educated in districts that do not have sufficient funds to buy textbooks and other materials. Other states have formed similar coaltions.
